members

(from left to right) paul mccartney, john lennon, ringo starr and george harrison
paul mccartney
james paul mccartney (june 18, 1942) was the beatles' bassist, main songwriter and vocalist, with john lennon. paul is responsible for many of the beatles' most creative works, for example, their album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. he wrote some of their most famous songs, like Hey Jude, Let it be and Yesterday

john lennon
john winston lennon (october 9, 1940 - december 8, 1980) was the band's rhythm guitarist, and main co-songwriter and vocalist along with paul. he was the founder of the band, under the name the quarrymen, in 1956. some of his most praised works in the beatles' discography are In my life, Strawberry fields forever and Come together

ringo starr
richard starkey (july 7, 1940) was the beatles' drummer and percussionist. he was the last member to join the band in 1962. he sang lead vocals in a few beatles tracks such as Yellow Submarine and Octopus's Garden. he left the band for a few months in 1968 but came back in the same year

george harrison
george harrison (february 25, 1943 - november 29, 2001) was, mostly, the beatles' lead guitarist. he also wrote songs and sang on lead vocals. he was the one to bring instruments of eastern cultures to beatles songs, like the sitar. some of his most notable works are Here comes the sun, Something, While my guitar gently weeps and Within you without you
a short story of their career
the beatles were a british band, originated in liverpool, that formed in 1962 and broke up in 1970. even though they lasted only 8 years, there are too many facts to fit on here so i'll just put some of the most important events of their history :)
the beatles actually started out as the quarrymen. they were a band founded by john lennon in 1956, which then evolved into the beatles by the early sixties. paul mccartney joined the group in 1957 and a year later, his friend from school george harrison did too. in 1962, their drummer pete best was kicked out to be replaced with ringo starr.
after the releases of their first albums and singles, the beatles were incredibly successful both in england and the US, to the point where they'd be followed everywhere by fans. this was called the beatlemania. during the beatlemania era they made 2 films: several tours across europe, the US and some other countries; and released 6 albums during the time. beatlemania ended in 1966 when the group stopped performing live due to the crazy fans. they only performed once more afterwards, in the famous rooftop concert in 1969.
in 1966, john lennon said in an interview that "the beatles were bigger than jesus" in terms of popularity. however, many fans got upset at his comment which led to many people attending and starting fires burning beatles records. that comment ruined the beatles' image for a while but john later apologized.
in late 1965 the beatles tried drugs for the first time, and all through 1966 to 1968 they experienced with psychedelic rock with songs like Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Tomorrow never knows and I'm only sleeping. their albums Revolver and Sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band are often praised for their psychedelic, trippy sound.
the band broke up in 1970 due to different reasons, the main one being the tension in the studio recordings between the members. the group had, apparently, planned a reunion in 1981 but the plans were ruined when john was murdered in late 1980.
despite having broken up, the beatles left a huge legacy even to this day, 50 years after their separation. they inspired directly and indirectly countless artists and still continue to be praised as one of the best and most influential bands of all time :)
their albums
the beatles, in their 8 years of career, made 13 studio albums. it's a bit confusing because of the compilations and US versions of the albums so here's a list of all of their studio albums!

their influence
the beatles are considered one of the most, if not the most, influential band in music history. here's a few reasons why:
they were pioneers in many new musical concepts. for example: using backwards recordings in songs; use an orchestra in a rock song; have a song dissolve into another, and they had one of the first concept albums of all time (Sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band)
they were also one of the first, and probably the first, artists of the british invasion musical movement in the early 60s. the beatles, along with some other bands who reached popularity in the same period, started it
many popular artists were influenced both direcly and indirectly by the beatles. a few of said artists are oasis, queen, nirvana, and the beach boys (both groups influenced each other in the 60s). a lot of other artists have been inspired by these bands, therefore influenced by the beatles in an indirect way
the beatles' song Yesterday is the most covered song of all time, couting with over 2,600 studio versions alone. it was performed around 7 million times in only the 20th century. their songs Eleanor Rigby, Blackbird, and And i love her are also included in the most covered songs of all time
